High-Fashion Pies

20 Mar

The NYT has an article today about how chicken pot pies are becoming the new high-fashion food of choice. Despite the odds (a high-fat, creamy comfort food is not what you’d normally choose to serve to models and the like), the pot pie has been on the menu at numerous fashion galas and is being served at a few top restaurants.

If the dish is having a high-flying moment, there’s a practical sensibility that’s appealing. “It’s Anna Wintour’s favorite dish because it’s quick to serve and moves things right along,” said her private chef, Hank Tomashevski. “It’s got everything you need in there, vegetables and a meat for meat-eaters, in one course.” Mr. Tomashevski catered the Vogue awards in 2009 and last year at Skylight Soho, where Ms. Wintour requested chicken potpie as the single offering. “It’s funny because people keep on requesting them,” he said. “I also make them for the fashion P.R. agency KCD for their holiday party and other events. It’s a real crowd pleaser.” … Ms. Wintour isn’t the only repeat fan. At L’Wren Scott’s fall 2011 show plus luncheon in February, the guests (who included Ms. Wren’s boyfriend, Mick Jagger) had chicken or vegetarian potpies and Pouilly-Fuissé. The designer had previously ordered potpies for her fall 2010 showing. “We presented some options to L’Wren such as a salade niçoise and a bento box, but she went back to the potpie.”
